What is with Scandinavian authors and crime fiction? Every Scandinavian novel I’ve encountered in the last seven months has been a crime fiction novel. I don’t know if I just attract them or if Scandinavian authors are obsessed with murder and mayhem.
I knew what to expect when I read Asa Larsson’s first book, and she did not disappoint, delivering a disturbing story filled with tension and intrigue. The animal torture was a little too much.
I don’t bat an eye at violence against humans. I’ve seen enough of it in fiction. But violence against animals turns my stomach. Fortunately, the violence was not gratuitous. Asa’s decision to explore the scene from the dog’s POV was genius.
Hopefully, this is the last time animals die in her novels. I don’t want Asa to make a habit of writing scenes of that nature.
