Asa Gray was a renowned botanist from the United States who helped develop botany in the US and made plant research widely respected worldwide.
Earlier, he was a teacher at several high schools in New Jersey and New York. In the 1830s, he developed an interest in natural science and plants, and by 1834, he was teaching at Hamilton College as a professor of botany. He would also become a professor at the University of Michigan.
In 1841, he teamed up with botanists John Carey and James Constable to conduct research in the North Carolina mountains. On that trip, he explored Roan Mountain and Grandfather Mountain, where he collected and studied many plant species.
It was during this time that Asa Gray moved to Harvard University. He would spend much of his later career at the institution.
For more than four decades, Asa Gray travelled across the world publishing a range of scientific books on plants. He was one of the regents of the Smithsonian Institution and was involved in the founding of the National Academy of Sciences.
In 1857, he got a letter from Charles Darwin, who described his theory of evolution by natural selection. He would later send him a draft of his book
On the Origin of Species. Gray would become one of the most prominent supporters of Darwin and his scientific theories of evolution.
In 1843, he published the scientific work
A Flora of North America, in which he examined the plants of the North American continent.
The work provides careful but short descriptions of plants that have become established or grow naturally north of Mexico. These plants are arranged by shared features, which the authors describe as the natural system.
It is a work that aims to explain and organize the many plant species across North America. It also helped scientists classify and identify plants more easily.
