Ever since I began reading Anthony Trollope’s novels, he has never failed to amaze me with his complex, precise, and hilarious skill of characterization. The second book in the Barsetshire series, Barchester Towers, captures 19th century provincial England with wisdom and amazing characters. It’s my favorite novel on the list of books by Trollope. An Eye for an Eye is an engaging story about marriage, family, decision-making, love, actions, and consequences. Its characters read like real people with their flaws and making normal mistakes throughout the book. In Can You Forgive Her? Trollope binds together issues of Politics, marriage, and privacy. He also focuses on women’s predicament.
While reading up on Anthony Trollope for an assignment, I found an amusing quote that accused the author of doing great harm to English fictitious literature. Cleary, literary snobbery was as alive back then as it is now.
Trollope shocked me. When I read ‘Barchester Towers,’ I couldn’t believe how funny the author was. I had a relatively low opinion of writers from previous centuries. Barring exceptions like Shakespeare and Dickinson, I don’t expect authors from the past to appeal to readers with modern tastes like myself.
And yet, even though Trollope was born in 1815, I have never read wittier historical fiction. Though, I suppose it doesn’t count as historical fiction because the author set the novels during his time.
