Anthony David
Anthony David is an American educator, biographer, and historian who made his name with his works that explore the history and politics of the Middle East.
As a scholar, he has published several significant works that showcase his depth of engagement with the intellectual history of the Jewish community and people.
Outside of academia, Anthony David has showcased his passion for cross-cultural dialogue and education. He works at the Tangier, Morocco-based
University of New England campus as an academic director in addition to teaching creative writing. In 2017, he founded
Moorish Tides, the literary magazine where his students publish their work.
Anthony David loves to work with people who go against long-held stereotypes and push for justice. Through his educational endeavors and writing, he continues to offer a nuanced understanding of intricate political and historical landscapes, even as he stresses the importance of empathy and dialogue in conflict resolution.
In 2003, Anthony David published his debut work,
The Patron, which is a biography of the founder of a large department store chain named Salman Schoken.
He follows the man’s transformation from being a poor migrant going door to door selling textiles into one of the biggest movers and shakers in Germany as a patron, media magnate, talent scout, and collector.
He would then get into the quest to disseminate the secular culture of the Jews to the Jewish masses, in the process creating culture through newspapers, publishing houses, and patronage of influential contemporary philosophers such as Thomas Mann and Martin Buber.
In his book
Improbable Friendship, Anthony David tells the story of the friendship of the unlikely bond between Palestinian Raymonda Tawil and Ruth Dayan, the Israeli.
Ruth is married to famous Israeli general Moshe Dayan, even as Raymonda Tawil, her friend, is a close relative of Yasser Arafat. The two became friends following the
Six-Day War, and despite their very different backgrounds, they spent years trying to bring peace to the region.
It draws from personal letters, diaries, and interviews to present a dual biography that lets its readers into the intricacies of the history of the Middle East from the perspective of two women who shared a commitment to peace and reconciliation.
