For early education, he went to a Catholic elementary school. Due to the way he dressed and the music he listened to (such as the Misfits, KISS, the Damned, Avenged Sevenfold, and the Dropkick Murphys), he got bullied. This bullying was reenacted in the “Knives and Pens” video.
He attended Cincinnati’s School for Creative and Performing Arts, majoring in vocal music and drama. Just 2 days after turning 18, he left school before graduating so that he could move to LA in hopes of furthering his potential career.
When he was 14, he and some of his friends formed their first band, just called “Biersack”, although they just played the 1 show. This project would eventually grow into what later became known as Black Veil Brides.
They signed in 2009 with StandBy Records, an indie label. A video for “Knives and Pens” was also released and has since garnered more than 200 million views.
Their debut, called “We Stitch These Wounds” was released in 2010, and sold more than 13,000 copies during its first week, ranking 36 on the
Billboard Top 200 chart and 1 on the
Billboard Independent chart.
In 2016, he released a solo album that he said would have a radically different sound from Black Veil Brides. He felt he couldn’t create this sound with the band, so he did it as a solo act. His inspiration for the project was his love for 80s synth and goth music. He worked with John Feldmann, who worked with Black Veil Brides.
In 2014, he released the first song, called “They Don’t Need to Understand” with a music video. The album was called “The Shadow Side”, and was released in 2016, with the lead single being “We Don’t Have to Dance”.
