Alistair MacLean was like a fine pizza: he got worse with age. Legend has it that he hated writing and was only in it for the money, and it shows. As the years progressed, his books have no heart (and sometimes no climax), and it’s clear that he was writing only to get things published. His early stuff is great, but his later stuff is often highly disappointing.
