Alison Arngrim
Alison Arngrim (Alison Margaret Arngrim) was born on January 18th, 1962 and is currently 63 years old. Alison Arngrim was born in New York City, New York, USA.
Alison Arngrim is an American author and actress best known for her role on
Little House on the Prairie, where she played Nellie Oleson from 1974 until 1982.
She began her career as a child actress and model in television commercials, securing the part of Nellie after auditioning for the roles of Laura Ingalls and later, Mary Ingalls. Her portrayal of Nellie became a cultural reference and a camp archetype for the spoiled “bad girl” throughout the 1970s.
Alison once described playing the character in a stand-up routine as being like having PMS for seven years.
Alison recorded a comedy album titled
Heeere’s Amy, where she played Amy Carter, the first daughter. Her mother guest-starred on the album, having previously voiced the Kennedy kids on Vaughn Meader’s comedy records.
After leaving
Little House on the Prairie, she guest-starred on TV shows such as
Fantasy Island and
The Love Boat. She was also a frequent panelist on the short-lived
Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour.
Beginning in 2006, Alison developed a successful stage career in France with her friend Patrick Loubatiere, a director/author/comedian. She performed in Agatha Christie’s
And Then There Were None as Emily Brent in the Judson Theatre Company’s production.
In addition to her performances, she devotes time to charitable organizations. One of her inspirations for doing charity work is the memory of Steve Tracy, her friend and fellow actor who played Percival Dalton on
Little House. He died in 1986 from complications of AIDS, after which she became an activist for AIDS awareness, including involvement with the ACT UP organization and working at an AIDS hotline. She also focuses on issues like child abuse, having been abused by her older brother when she was younger, and speaks frequently for and lobbies with the group PROTECT.
Alison is a Young Artist Award—Former Child Star “Lifetime Achievement” Award honoree, having started her TV career at the age of 12. She also won the 2006 TV Land Award for the character Most Desperately in Need of a Timeout for her work on the show.
Confessions of a Prairie Bitch is the comic memoir Alison wrote about growing up as one of TV’s most memorable characters: Nellie Oleson, the devious character on the hit TV show
Little House on the Prairie.
With behind-the-scenes tales from the set, along with stories from her bohemian upbringing in West Hollywood and her headline-making advocacy work on behalf of abused kids and HIV awareness, this memoir is a must-read for fans of everything
Little House.
