I always enjoy Alex Gray’s books and I like how theyquickly immerse me into the stories set in amazing surroundings. DCI Lorimer mystery crime series begins with a police procedural set in Glasgow. The author infuses suspense to ensure the reader is at the edge of their seat, and Just when you think you’ve solved the crime, you later realize you have taken another red herring. Characters are well developed, and I found Bill Lorimer’s to be a compelling and thrilling character. A Small Sweeping has fleshed-out characters where each one of them show their strengths and weaknesses. I like how Alex Gray develops Lorimer and his wife’s relationship so well to add flavor to the story.
I am one of those annoying book snobs who feel like all police procedurals, and crime fiction novels are the same. An author in those genres has to do something unique and interesting to pique my interest. Alex Gray captured my attention because his protagonist in the DCI Lorimer series was an attractive, happy detective with a decent marriage.
You don’t see that in crime fiction. The genre has a lot of miserable detectives. In that regard, I salute Alex for thinking outside the box. He’s willing to experiment with the notion that police work doesn’t always destroy the personal lives of its detectives.
We need more heroes like Lorimer. I am tired of old, exhausted, haunted inspectors.
