Alan Colmes
Alan Colmes (Alan Samuel Colmes) was born on September 24th, 1950. Alan passed away February 23rd, 2017 at 66 years old. Alan Colmes was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Colmes attended Hofstra University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in communications.
Alan Colmes was an American TV and radio host, author, and political commentator. He was best known as the liberal man who sat in with Sean on their highly charged political debate show.
In 1996, Roger Ailes, who was then at
Fox News, saw something in him and believed he could add something to a Fox program. He would be hired and began cohosting
Hannity and Colmes, the political program.
While many critics saw him as a token liberal, Colmes often asserted that he was on the program to provide nuanced and balanced perspectives.
Colmes also worked on other things outside
Hannity and Colmes. He was a contributor to several programs on
Fox News, such as
Red Eye and
The O’Reilly Factor, in addition to maintaining
Liberaland, the blog.
Colmes was married to Jocelyn Elise Crowley, sister of conservative commentator and Rutgers University professor Monica Crowley.
He passed on at the age of 66 from lymphoma.
It was in 2003 that Alan Colmes published
Red, White & Liberal. In the work, he asks the question of how America can protect its liberties at risk and regain its place as an example of democracy.
He asserts that the conservative administration of George Bush has manipulated the facts of the
War on Terror to silence critics. He calls the Conservatives hypocrites for spreading a myth that the media is biased towards the Left.
Nonetheless, the work argues that even though the Left and Right have their differences, the only way to protect and preserve freedoms and the nation is to reach out and find mutually beneficial solutions.
In 2012, Alan Colmes published
Thank the Liberals for Saving America, in which he asserts that liberal policies have been key in the shaping of the United States into a more equitable and just society.
He makes the argument that programs such as
Medicare,
Social Security, and advancements in civil rights can be traced back to liberals. He points out the role of liberals in the separation of church and state, immigration reform, and environmental protection.
Colmes also challenges conservative talking points, as he asserts that there are contradictions in their arguments, even as he argues for more liberalism to uphold freedom and democracy.
