A American’s The Survivalist series, the books are well written, realistic, and address some things that truly could happen during a morally murky and confusing situation.
The author does a great job of fleshing out the characters through the different novels with more personal interaction and emotional experiences between each character.
There is also some great action scenes and American’s writing improves with each one, with a strong sense of humor from each of the lovable characters. With each one, things get increasingly more intense, and the pace never lets up for a second. You even find yourself learning a bit while you read them.
Going Home is the first book in The Survivalist series and takes place in a world of societal collapse where one man is prepared for such a moment. He’ll make the grueling trip from Tallahassee to his home in Lake County in order to get back to his family, doing whatever it takes to get there.
A. American’s book list is for every guy who ever thought about building a bunker in his backyard. These books are for people who like to stock up on food to get them through the winter, just in case. These books are for men with guns who know how to hunt. Most of all, these books are for people who know the end is coming one day and we better be ready.
Or they are just for guys like me who like to read about that kind of thing.
People attack religious fiction for being too preachy. But I don’t think they realize that survivalist fiction is just as bad. I experimented with the genre during my teens and but I hated it because the authors I read were too political.
In that regard, A. American is a breath of fresh air. The person who recommended the author to me doesn’t like survivalist fiction. The fact that A. American appealed to them intrigued me.
So, I bought ‘The Survivalist’ series and, so far, I haven’t regretted it. A. American knows what we want. Rather than diluting each chapter with political lectures, he immerses readers like me in the breathtaking insanity that can ensue when an apocalyptic event occurs.
What a great story. My only problem is the audiobook could have been 8 hours instead 13 hours if he left out all the petty descriptions. I dont need to know how he buttered his bread or which hand he used to blow his nose.
Thank you for the survivalists series. My husband is obsessed with them! I have a couple of library books and then I will start on Going Home. He is busting to discuss the books with me! (Living in Maine I’m finding your novels aren’t in the library system and I’m ordering online.) Hubby will be disappointed when he reaches the end of the series. Thank you for keeping him enthralled!
GOING HOME – I don’t know where to begin with this book. If you haven’t read it, you should. The premise of this book is what this world is coming to. It proves I am NOT ready for anything like this to happen.
The book follows what happens when time stands still as we know it. It catches the main character several hundred miles from home and his trials on getting home to his family safely. Every bit of this book is very detailed.
I really, really liked this book. I liked the (good) characters. You had to feel for them. About two-thirds of the way through the book the story splits into three separate stories. I liked how this help keep the book flowing. At one point I felt like I was going to choke-up at what was happening.
I know this type of book is everyone’s cup of tea. All you have to do is read the one-star comments.
